How Explorer is organized

Stage

5 stages, from basics to analysis

Each stage covers a broad area of chess. Pawn introduces the board and basic tactics; Queen covers advanced strategy, endgames and game analysis. The age bands and rating ranges are suggested entry guides, not measured outcomes.

Level

10 levels, two per stage

Each level contains 20 to 22 sessions and ends with a graded session. The ten graded sessions include five checkpoints and five stage graduations.

Unit

30 units across the levels

A unit groups sessions around a chess topic, such as forks, pawn structure or rook endgames. Each unit includes a review session; there are 34 review sessions across the curriculum.

Session

213 ready-to-teach sessions

Each session is one chess lesson, 50 to 75 minutes long; most are 60 minutes. Most use an eight-part outline, with graded positions, an activity and homework in three forms. See what one session contains.

Every session lists its prerequisites. The first session opens the curriculum. Each later session shows which lessons come before it, helping coaches follow the sequence.

Two teaching tracks for different groups

Explorer and Challenger are complete, separate courses. Both move through Pawn, Knight, Bishop, Rook and Queen; Challenger introduces guided full games at C004 and notation at C006.

Choose a track for each group.Explorer contains 1,640 graded lesson positions. Challenger adds 853 lesson puzzle exercises, with deliberate retrieval repeats. The combined 2,493 counts exercises, not unique chess positions.

Explorer · ages 5–7

5–8 minute blocks. Foundation and Core build readiness; Challenge is optional independent stretch. Mini-games first, then full games when ready. Its 213-session sequence begins at S001.

Challenger · ages 8+

60-minute lessons with practical play. Warm-up, Foundation and Core, then optional independent Challenge stretch. Guided full games from C004; notation from C006. Its own 150-session sequence begins at C001.

Choose a course for each group; use readiness as well as age.
